Kurds mourn for those died in Halabja catastrophe
Today all Kurdish people mourn for all those who died Halabja city and commemoration ceremony began Tuesday morning in the city as Kurds all over the world marking 22nd anniversary of bombing the city in 1988 by previous tyrannical regime killing thousands of innocent people.
The ceremony began in the presence of the Prime Minister of Kurdistan Regional Government, Dr Barham Ahmed Saleh, a number of officials, delegations from foreign countries.
The Prime Minister noted that today we all come to Halabja to remind the world of mass murder against the Kurds and we came here to deliver a message that we do not forget this painful catastrophe.
In March 1988, as Iraq's eight-year war with Iran was coming to an end, Kurdish peshmerga with Tehran's backing, took over the farming community of Halabja, near the border. The Iraqi army responded by bombing the area.
Iraqi jets then swooped over the small town and for five hours sprayed it with nerve agents killed more than 5 thousands people and some more others were wounded.
